Engine maker lays off 390

WHITAKERS The company says it's laying off 180 full-time employees and 210 temporary employees at its Whitakers factory because of the poor economy and lagging sales.

Eleven hundred workers will continue to work at the plant building diesel engines for industrial, agricultural and marine uses.

A spokesman said the company has made cuts at plants across the country, and the Whitakers was one of the last to feel them because of the wide range of products made at the facility.
