Three Cups of Tea author to speak at UNC

CHAPEL HILL Mortenson was originally a professional mountain climber, but on a failed attempt to conquer the Himalayas' infamous K-2 in 1993, he noticed rural Pakistani children who were so poor that their families couldn't afford the $1 a day to pay a village teacher.

That began an effort to build dozens of rural schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and made Mortenson an international spokesman for the value of combating terrorism through education.

He tells his story in the bestselling novel "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace ... One School at a Time"

Mortenson will give a talk March 30 at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union. UNC officials say the event is already full.
