The Durham Police Department is searching for the person responsible for killing a man and woman at a local apartment. The bodies were found at the Beech Lake Apartments in the 4800 block of University Drive on Saturday morning.

On Sunday, authorities identified the male victim as 24-year-old Jamarcus Valentino Umstead. Police say Umstead is listed as a tenant at the apartment where his body was found.

On Monday, investigators identified the woman as 20-year-old Rarnisha Woods.

Police say both victims were shot and the case is being investigated as a double homicide.

Some neighbors nearby say they heard gunshots Friday night.

"I just heard some gunfire last night," resident John Dennard said. "I didn't think anything about it because it didn't sound like it was close or anything. It sounded way off in the distance. I didn't think anything of it because, you know, nothing like that ever happens around here."

Investigators do not believe it was a random incident, based on their investigation so far. No charges have been filed at this time.

Police want anyone with information to give them a call.
