Trucker killed hitting bridge

SAMPSON COUNTY The North Carolina Highway Patrol says 26 year old Sidney Williams of Raleigh was headed down the interstate in his Schneider National Carriers tractor trailer when he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. It happened at 2:30 in the morning.

Williams' truck went off the left side of the road for more than 200 feet before hitting the guardrail and slamming into a bridge support at Exit-348. That's about 20 miles southeast of I-95.

The trucker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Westbound traffic was flowing again by mid-morning, but the bridge will have to be inspected before eastbound traffic will be allowed to pass under it again. It will likely be mid-afternoon before the highway completely opens up.

In the meantime, traffic is being diverted through a detour.
