Officers arrived on the scene shortly after the woman barricaded herself inside the home and threatened to hurt herself.
After eight hours and no contact with the woman, SWAT entered the residence and found her body just after 10 p.m.
"Our emergency response team was able to make an entry into the residence and they found her deceased from a gunshot wound," Fayetteville Police spokesperson Theresa Chance said.
Chance said it appeared to be self-inflicted, however it is standard procedure for homicide investigators to take over the case.
During the incident, officials evacuated nearby homes as a precaution and closed surrounding streets to traffic.
The woman's name will not be released until her next of kin is notified.
