Soldier killed in traffic accident

Police said 21-year-old Pfc. Mario Gabriel Trejo-Castro was killed on Saturday in a traffic accident.Fayetteville police said around 4 a.m. they received a call that a pedestrian was hit on Sycamore Dairy Road near the McDonald's on Bragg Boulevard.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Trejo-Castro lying in the roadway.

Authorities said Trejo-Castro, a construction equipment operator, was involved in a physical altercation with an unknown person just before the accident. They said that person left the scene, while the vehicle that struck Trejo-Castro stopped.

Trejo-Castro was transported to Cape Fear Medical Center where he later dead.

Fort Bragg officials said Trejo-Castro was born in Mexico, but called Berkeley, Ill. home.

He joined the Army in July 2008 and arrived at Fort Bragg in December 2008. Trejo-Castro was a member of the 618th Engineer Support Company, 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade.

Futher details surrounding the accident are not being released at this time. Fayetteville Police are investigating the incident.
