Sheriff Jeff Frazier says deputies got a call about suspicious activity in the area of Buttercup Lane in Roanoke Rapids Wednesday night- and arrived to hear a banging noise coming from a nearby corn field.
They checked it out and arrested 41-year-old Thomas Olya Green and 34-year-old John William Butler who they say were beating open the change box on a pay phone.
Investigators say the entire phone booth had been ripped from its foundation with a van and then taken to the field to be opened. Green and Butler are also charged with taking three other phones the same way.
The men were charged with 3 counts of larceny, 3 counts of possession of stolen goods, and 3 counts of damage to a coin operated machine.
Butler and Green are free on $5,000 bond.
