College panel hears plan to admit illegal immigrants

RALEIGH

The public hearing is part of the process the State Board of Community Colleges must follow to change the admissions rules.

For those who are unable to attend, written comments will be accepted until 5 p.m., Friday, December 18 via email at publiccomments@nccommunitycolleges.edu . Comments may also be submitted via U.S. Mail at the following address:

In September, the community colleges board approved a policy to enroll undocumented immigrants if they pay out-of-state tuition rates and have graduated from an American high school. They also can't displace students who are in the U.S. legally.

The new rule would take effect in April if it makes it through the approval process.
