It happened just south of the Little River bridge on Green Pace Road. That's near Highway 64 in the Wendell area.
It began with an investigation into a burglary before dawn at a convenience store on Marshburn Road in Wendell.
Later in the morning, deputies got a call about two suspicious men in the area and tried to capture them. They chased the two men into a wooded area behind a mobile home.
What happened next is unclear. Shots were fired. One man was killed by the gunfire. Police later identified him as 25-year-old Cornelius Pierre Harrison.
The second suspect, 24-year-old Byron Lendell Williams, was bitten by a police dog and Deputy Brad Manville has a broken hand.
Deputy Manville and his K-9 partner Jagger have been with the sheriff's office for three years.
Meanwhile, the sheriff's office has located a third suspect, 36-year-old Jonathan Edward Carr.
He is charged with being an accomplice to the break-in.
