Police: Text message about rapist a fake

Fayetteville police are warning residents about a text message regarding the recent rapes in the area.The message shows a picture of a man and claims he's responsible for the assaults.

But police say the message is not related to their investigation and they don't know who the man in the mesage is or where the text originated.

Authorities also say the person in the message is not a suspect.

They say residents should be aware of their surroundings and be aware of any suspicious activity.

If suspicious activity is observed, police say call 911 or contact the Fayetteville Police at 910-433-1529.
