The accident happened around 8 a.m. The U.S. Coast Guard says Sydney Valesco fell into the harbor, about 15 to 20 feet from the bridge and then a co-worker jumped in to rescue him.
The co-worker who jumped in was rescued by boat. The Coast Guard, divers and a helicopter from Elizabeth City are assisting in the search for Valesco.
The bridge connects Manteo and Manns Harbor via business Highway 64. The workers were painting steel beams under the bridge and blasting lead paint when Valesco fell off.
