Investigators baffled by murder-suicide

SPRING LAKE, N.C. The detectives investigating say they are baffled by the weekend murder-suicide that happened inside a Harnett County home. Investigators are still trying to determine a motive in the case.

Authorities say Richard Thompson, 22, killed his mother Carolyn, 61, and father James, 67, before turning the gun on himself.

Jimmy Thompson, Richard's brother, was out with a friend at the time, when they decided to return home, according to Jimmy's fiance.

They walked in to find all three people dead, with a gun in Richard's hand, she said.

That friend, Shannon Thompson (no relation), was overcome at the scene by a combination of heat and emotion. She was semi-conscious when Eyewitness News arrived on scene.

Paramedics were called to treat her, and she was eventually driven away in a friend's vehicle.

A friend of Richard Thompson spoke to Eyewitness News moments after arriving on scene. He expressed shock that his friend could have done something like this.

One neighbor told us he asked officers if he needed to be worried about his safety. He said the officers told him - the way it looks now - he does not.
