Student shot near FSU campus

FAYETTEVILLE

It happened early Sunday morning at the University Place Apartment complex on Murchison Road.

Senior Bransford Elmore was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment for a gunshot to the buttocks.

"We was standing at the club house we just heard like three gun shots. And then we seen somebody with a black shirt running," said FSU student Kiara Cooper.

FSU Chancellor Dr. James Anderson said a private security officer at the apartments also heard the shots and called campus police - who say Elmore had a gun on him.

"We learned that a young man - who is a student here - received an injury from a shooting. We're not clear as to whether or not it was self-inflected or generated by someone else," said Anderson.

The apartments are leased by a private firm. There are signs that say weapons aren't allowed.

The chancellor says he plans on beefing up security especially on the weekends.

"And so we need to make sure that especially on Friday and Saturday nights - cause weekend nights are when we tend to find the biggest activity - we want to make sure that we increase policing of that area during those nights," said Anderson.

The investigation continues and no charges have been filed.
