It happened on Heritage Way in Cameron - about 50 miles southwest of Raleigh.
Animal control officials believe Akayla Hill was attacked by her neighbor's dog, as the dog was nursing puppies, and got protective.
Hill had been in ICU since the incident, but was transferred out and listed in good condition at UNC as of Friday.
Officials say the Rottweiler and eight of its puppies are in quarantine following the incident.
