Authorities say the man agreed to voluntarily accompany RPD personnel to a home on Parr Vista Ct.
They say the man, who was not in custody, then agreed to voluntarily accompany RPD personnel to the department's Detective Division offices on Atlantic Avenue in conjunction with the on-going investigation.
However, while at the home on Parr Vista Ct., the man secured a personal handgun and shot himself in the head.
The attempted suicide occurred shortly after 7 p.m. in the backyard of the residence.
The subject was transported to WakeMed with injuries that were initially believed to be nonlife-threatening, but his condition later worsened and he died Saturday night. The man's name has not been released.
Authorities say RPD personnel did not discharge any firearms during the incident. A TASER was deployed by an officer in an effort to prevent the attempted suicide.
Police say the original case, why they were talking to the man in the first place, is still being investigated.
