Sanderson Farms didn't give a timetable.
Supporters of the project in Nash County say the delay will give them more time to work out legal challenges.
The Nash County Board of Commissioners has rezoned a site in southern Nash County for the plant in an area off N.C. Highway 97 west of the Rocky Mount-Wilson Airport.
But some residents raised environmental concerns about the planned hatchery, spray field, and processing plant.
The city of Wilson and a group of nearby property owners filed a lawsuit against the county alleging that the rezoning violated state laws and that wastewater from the plant could affect Wilson's water supply.
But supporters of the plan say a chicken plant would bring hundreds of jobs to an area that badly needs them.
