Police say a driver involved in a crash on I-540 Tuesday morning that stalled the morning commute for hundreds has died.

A spokesman for the Raleigh Police Department said Wednesday afternoon that Sharon Garret McKinnon of Oxford was one of the drivers involved in the multi-vehicle crash.

The accident on I-540 near Glenwood Avenue partially blocked westbound lanes during the height of rush hour.

Police said two vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes then one of them crossed the median and hit an oncoming car. That car then hit the guardrail and swerved into traffic, hitting a fourth car.

Four people were taken to the hospital.

The crash was just one of several in wet and stormy conditions Tuesday morning. Over on I-40 near I-540, four of five eastbound lanes were closed after an accident involving a tractor-trailer.

Pictures from the scene showed a tanker flipped on its side.

It was late Tuesday afternoon before authorities were able to get the truck right side up and moved off the highway.
