James Warren Taylor, 45, faces 20 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. Apex police say the charges stem from a joint investigation with the Cary Police Department that revealed the receipt and possession of child pornography.
Officers executed a search warrant at Taylor's home around 6:15 a.m. Thursday and obtained evidence related to the charges.
His bond was set at $800,000.
At the time of his arrest, Taylor was a civilian employee with the Highway Patrol. He was assigned to the Technical Support Division. The NCHP Internal Affairs Division supported Apex police during the investigation.
The investigation is ongoing and police are not releasing additional details at this time.
