"It was just heartbreaking," Gregory Torres said.
The heartbreak of losing a loved one is weighing heavily on him. He says Josefa Torres and seven family members had traveled to Raleigh for a fun family weekend.
"One of a kind, yeah," he said describing Josefa. "Like a little angel on earth."
Gregory says Torres, his mother and several other relatives had spent the weekend in Raleigh with other family members, celebrating Dominican Mother's Day and Memorial Day.
He says those family members then boarded the bus and headed back home to New York Monday night. Tuesday morning he received a call from his sister telling him about the crash.
"I just got up and started making phone calls to make sure everything was okay," Gregory explained. "I located my mom and some other family, but I couldn't locate her [Josefa]."
Wednesday he learned Josefa didn't make it. He also found out about the unsatisfactory safety rating the Department of Transportation gave the bus company, Sky Express of Charlotte, N.C.
Now, he wonders if more could have been done to prevent the tragedy.
"I think they should have stopped immediately," he said. "This wouldn't happen."
Gregory says two of his relatives remain in the hospital. They suffered serious injuries and have a long recovery ahead of them.
The bus driver, 37-year-old Kin Yiu Cheng, of Flushing, N.Y., has been cited with reckless driving.
