The North Carolina Highway Patrol says Officer Chad Penland was traveling west on Highway 55 when he tried to pull over a driver Friday. His motorcycle collided with a pick-up truck at the intersection of Morrisville Carpenter Road.
Troopers say Penland's lights and sirens were on. The driver of the pick-up truck, 72-year-old Benjamin Rainy, received a citation for failure to yield.
Officer Penland was seriously injured but is expected to recover.
