Suspect arrested in assault, chase, crash

DURHAM

Officers responded to a disturbance call in the 2700 block of Elgin Street around 3 p.m. Residents say three men with guns entered their home and asked to speak with a person who doesn't live there.

Police say the suspects then assaulted one of the residents and fled the scene in a gray, Ford Crown Victoria. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

An officer spotted the suspect vehicle on I-85 near Roxboro Road and attempted to stop it. The driver refused to pull over and exited Duke Street. The officer pursued and they ended up on Ruffin Street where the suspect vehicle ran off the road and struck a fence near Hudson Ave.

Three men ran from the scene, and the car caught fire.

One suspect was apprehended near the scene and a second suspect was caught on Leon Street near Glendale Ave about 20 minutes later Friday.

The third suspect was arrested over the weekend.

Corey Lamont Whoie, 21, is charged with attempted breaking and entering, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, assulat with a deadly weapon, assault by pointing a gun, possession of a firearm and two counts felony probation violation.

Whoie is being held at the Durham County Jail under a $550,000 bond.
