It happened around 10:40 p.m. on S. Eastern Boulevard near Person Street.
Authorities said the driver of a 2008 Dodge Nitro, 21-year-old Naja Hamilton, was driving down S. Eastern Boulevard just as a pedestrian attempted to cross the street.
As Hamilton merged into a left turning lane, she struck the pedestrian. Fifty-year-old Wayne Joseph Smith was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he was declared dead.
Hamilton was not injured. No charges have been filed at this time.
