Investigators say 47-year-old Michael Lloyd Williams had been hospitalized since the shooting on Jeffrey Drive in Fayetteville May 12.
A booking photograph showed Williams wearing a helmet to protect his head after medical treatment.
He was charged with first-degree murder after his release from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Williams was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg and had been involved in a seven-year relationship with 24-year-old Stephanie Thompson.
