The 14 year old's grandmother spoke with ABC11 Tuesday. She said she decided to share her story to help other parents and grandparents realize this could happen to their child.
"After this week he will become a number. In society, he will be a nobody. He will be a number. But he's somebody. He could be anybody's child," she said. "You don't want that for your child. For your Grandchild. It was a shock. It was a shock to all of us."
The woman said her grandson got mixed up with the wrong crowd.
"There is a little known gang, that's Fly Boyz, that's through Douglas Byrd [High School]," she explained.
The boy's grandmother said it started with taking bikes in the neighborhood and stealing socks from a department store.
"But deep down we know, you don't go from being a petty thief to this big time criminal," she said.
