The Fayetteville Observer reported Tuesday that Fort Bragg is losing about 430 civilian positions because of federal budget cuts. The news follows an announcement by the U.S. Postal Service last week that it's recommending closing two mail-sorting centers in Fayetteville that could mean the loss of 400 jobs.

At Fort Bragg, deputy garrison commander Doug Earle said the civilian jobs the base is cutting must be eliminated by the end of September. Nearly 300 of the positions are part of the 18th Airborne Corps that oversees maintenance, public works and public safety.
The rest of the positions are part of Forces Command, which recently moved to Fort Bragg from Fort McPherson, Ga., and Army Material Command.
In all, the Defense Department is eliminating nearly 9,000 positions.
Earle says most of the cuts from the 18th Airborne Corps are being handled through attrition. He says officials still need to cut about 130 jobs.
