Public bus collides with truck in Durham, four hurt

DURHAM

Witnesses said the bus ran off the road and into a tree following the collision. The front end of the bus was smashed in.

Pictures from the scene showed a contractor's truck in the roadway with heavy front-end damage. A sedan sat nearby that was also apparently involved.

Lori Darling said she was in her car waiting for the light to change when she saw the bus in front of the truck.

"He slammed on his brakes, I heard the screeching brakes--that's when your heart stops," she said. "He hit the bus, knocked the bus toward me. I saw the windshield from the bus come flying at me, because the windshield came out of the bus and the whole bus came at me! I thought, finally, I'm going to get hit by a bus!"

Darling was able to joke about the incident later because she was not hurt. Four people -- the bus driver, a passenger and two people inside the truck -- were taken to the hospital with non-serious injuries.

Police charged the bus driver, 41-year-old Meg Cabot, with running a red light and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
