Apex police chief retiring

Apex Police Chief Jack Lewis said Monday he will retire after seven years as chief and 37 years in law enforcement.

Lewis said retirement will give him time to spend with his family.

"Apex citizens have been exceptionally fortunate to have a man with the dedication, experience and most of all, integrity, of Chief Jack Lewis. We have enjoyed one of the lowest crime rates anywhere due in large measure to his ability to inspire his officers with the same commitment he has for public service," said Apex Mayor Keith Weatherly in a statement.

Town Manager Bruce Radford said he hopes to have a new chief named by mid December.
