Amtrak train hits truck in Virginia

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- An Amtrak train collided with a tractor-trailer close to the border of North Carolina and Virginia on Thursday just before 1 p.m. According to an Amtrak spokesperson, 267 passengers were on the train.

The spokesperson initially said the accident happened in Pleasant Hill, N.C. Later, the Amtrak official said it happened closer to Emporia, Va., which is just north of Northampton County.

Amtrak officials told ABC11 there were no reported injuries to the passengers or the crew members.

The train that crashed into the tractor-trailer was Train 80, The Carolinian, which travels daily between Charlotte and New York City.

Pictures from Chopper 11 showed the trailer of the flatbed truck was destroyed by the impact.

It is not yet known how the crash occurred or if anyone not on board the train was injured.
