The water geyser occurred just after 10 p.m. Thursday near NC State.
Water shot several feet into the air. Two lanes were closed.
Crews contained the geyser around 11:30 p.m. They believe it might have been caused by a broken air release valve.
Public Utility officials estimated about 100 gallons of water were lost per minute during the incident.
