New charges filed in bizarre sex crime

DURHAM

Joy Johnson, a former-vice chairwoman of the Durham Democratic Party, and her husband, Rev. Joseph Craig are accused of kidnapping, abusing, and sexually assaulting at least two victims in their Durham home.

Craig is facing two new charges of second-degree kidnapping and one count of second-degree sex offense.

He is being held under $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear on the new charges 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Johnson is facing one new count of felony aid and abetting. She is accused of aiding Craig in second-degree kidnapping by insighting and encouraging Craig as he handcuffed the male victim and forced him into a dog cage.

The male victim was left there for hours and terrorized from May 1 - June 27.

Johnson is scheduled to appear in court on the new charge 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Durham Police say the investigation is ongoing.
