Live mortar found in Hillsborough
HILLSBOROUGH Eyewitness News has learned a piece of what looked like live ammunition brought to Hillsborough Police Department by people who found it while cleaning out a shed on some property they recently bought.
Police describe it as a long shell that looks like a large rifle round.
Authorities have blocked off a one block radius around the police station and called the Durham Sheriff's Department who brought an ordanence disposal unit to the scene to remove it.
They determined it not to be live and removed it from the area. Police say you should never remove something that apears to be explosive.
The people who turned in the material will not be charged.
"It's real important to leave stuff like that at home because you could blow up going down the road and no one would ever know what happened to you," Hillsborough Police Cprl. Timothy Corbett said.
