Johnston County officials evacuated a block-and-half radius around the leak in downtown.
Officials say it was a release of gas from a valve on an outside tank behind a house. No injuries were reported.
According to Johnston County Communications the fire department cleared the area and allowed residents back into downtown an hour later.
Pine Level Town Hall closed for the day following the evacuation.
