The North Carolina Supreme Court is hearing arguments in the appeals case of a repeat DWI offender convicted of killing a Durham grandmother during a drunk driving crash.

In 2005, Kenneth Maready stole a car and fled from deputies who had pulled him over.

He later crashed into a pickup truck driven by 61-year-old Jay Stokes, killing her.

Maready was convicted in 2006 for the crash. Earlier this year, an appeals court ordered a new trial, ruling deputies should have never stopped Maready.
