Troopers say 32-year-old Michael Reel of Fayetteville crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. He collided with a car driven by 57-year-old Paul Gilmore of Sanford.
The drivers were both pinned in their vehicles. One vehicle reportedly caught on fire.
Authorities had to shut down the five-lane highway in both directions while they cleared the scene. Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
