Sheriff's deputies say they were responding to a call that someone was hurt at the Glendale Road residence, but when they arrived, a man shot at them.
A deputy returned fire and shot and killed the suspect, 54-year-old Reginald Lee Witcher of Kenly.
Deputy Sgt. J.K. Garner and Deputy A.J. Case have been placed on administrative leave with pay while the SBI investigates the incident.
