Eyewitnesses say the crossing arms trapped the car, right before the train slammed into it.
Clayton is at Duke Hospital in intensive care with some broken ribs, but in stable condition.
Railroad authorities are investigating.

ORANGE COUNTY Troopers say 79-year-old Ida Clayton tried to cross the train tracks at Mount Herman Church Road Saturday. It appears the crossing arms were up at the time.
