Student killed in car accident

DURHAM It happened just after 7 a.m. near Northern High School. Durham police say a northbound car driven by 17-year-old John Bass tried to make a left turn onto Milton Road when it was T-boned in the passenger side by a Dodge van driven by Bobby Jean Holmes of Raleigh.

Bass was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. His passenger, 17-year-old Anthony "AJ" Pegram, was killed by the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Holmes was treated at the scene for minor injuries. A passenger in the van was not injured.

The Durham school district says Pegram was a popular senior at Northern High School. He was also a reciever for the school football team.

Students who spoke with Eyewitness News Thursday said they were in shock.

"I didn't know what to do. It's the first time anyone I know has ever died," explained fellow student Malaky Bark.

Counselors from neighboring schools went to Northern Thursday morning to comfort students who are grieving.

The cause of the accident is under investigation and no charges have been filed.
