The Department of Health and Human Services says the director of the Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro has decided to step down. Dr. Jack St.Clair has been offered a transfer to the Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center in Black Mountain to fill a vacant position as business manager.Cherry Hospital has been under fire since a video was released that showed a 50-year-old dying patient was largely ignored by staff members. Three workers were fired and others disciplined.

The federal government even stopped its insurance payments to the facility in September because it said conditions were dangerous for patients.

The DHHS says day-to-day management of the hospital will now be overseen by an independent management team retained by DHHS. It's working to try and get federal funding reestablished.

DHHS has already started advertising for a new director.
