According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the number of people killed on state roads in 2008 decreased by 18 percent compared to 2007. About 1,400 people died in wrecks last year compared to about 1,700 in 2007.

Highway experts attribute the drop to fewer people on the roads because of gasoline prices and the slumping economy.
