Run for heroes set for this weekend

RALEIGH The memorial service for the eight Raleigh police officers who've died in the line of duty is set for Saturday April 25.

The service will be held at 8:30 a.m. on the Hargett Street Side of Nash Square. At 9 a.m., the 5K race will start, and the McGruff Crime Dog Dash for kids will be at 10. At 10:30, the awards ceremony will be held at Nash Square, followed by a post race social which will be held at Napper Tandy’s and the Blue Martini, which are adjacent to one another on N. West Street. There will also be a raffle at the post race social which will include autographed sports items.

Organizers say fundraising has gone well, now they want people to come take part.

"Support for our cause has been phenomenal,” said retired Raleigh Police Department Major Dennis Lane, “including nearly $30,000 in corporate sponsorship. That’s what we hoped to raise from the entire event, so we very much appreciate the way the business and corporate community have come through for such an important cause. Now, we hope people will show their individual support by running in the race or participating in other events planned for the 25th.”

Anyone who wishes to register for the race or who wants to learn more about the fallen officers who are being honored can find information at www.RunforourHeroes.org. All donations are tax deductible.
