The Durham Police Department and Project Safe Neighborhoods, which is a federal program aimed at reducing gun and gang crime, went out Thursday to canvass the neighborhood where a 7-year-old boy was shot Sunday. The child was hit by a stray bullet on Hart Street. He was taken to Duke Hospital for treatment.

Police say at least nine bullets were fired during the incident. One hit the boy. Two parked cars were also damaged.

Officers hope they can find someone who may have seen what happened and can help identify the person who fired the gun. So far, they have made no arrests.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator J. Smith at (919) 560-4415, ext. 29312, or CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
