Cumberland County Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler is giving Spring Lake until July 1 to pay for deputies who have been patrolling the town. The deputies have been providing the service because its police department was stripped of its power in May.

According to the Fayetteville Observer, Sheriff Butler told the town he will pull extra deputies from Spring Lake if the town doesn't pay. That means the four deputies would be cut to one.

Since the police department was stripped of its power, two police have been charged with embezzlement and obstruction of justice. The police chief and the town manager have also resigned.
