North Carolina lawmakers went home Thursday instead of staying to hammer out a compromise on the state budget. That despite Governor Perdue's call Wednesday for them to stay and get the job done.

Rep. Jim Crawford of Granville County said leaders felt they aren't far enough along with negotiations to finish by the end of the holiday weekend.

House and Senate negotiators are trying to figure out how to raise $1 billion in new revenues.

The Legislature approved a stopgap spending plan Tuesday that lets state government operate without a final budget through July 15.
