Part of Durham left powerless

DURHAM Duke Energy reported most of the problems were in the area north of I-40 and west of Fayetteville Road.

Duke Power customers lost electricity during the hottest part of the day for about an hour, because a transformer blew.

At the height of the outage, approximately 9,100 customers were without power.

"As I slowly pulled around the corner, and there was a huge explosion," witness Earl Mosher said. "I backed up a little bit and I asked the firefighter what was that and he said a transformer exploded. My neighbor calls me and says, 'Earl did you see that, see what, when that transformer blew,' that whole tree exploded with it."

Power was restored to the area around 7 p.m.
