Tree falls on car, kills man

GARNER Authorities said the tree fell on a Ford Focus along Old Stage Road near the intersection of True Way Lane near Hwy 401.

The front seat passenger of the car, 21-year-old Dejuan Green, was killed. Green's girlfriend, 24-year-old Brandy Donovan, a passenger in the back seat and the driver, 32-year-old John Wolff, were injured.

A witness said she heard a loud boom and saw Donovan running hysterically.

"She kept hitting Dejuan saying, 'Hang in there, hang in there,'" witness Adele Jackson said. "Her whole face was bloody. She had blood dripping all over her face and she didn't have any shoes on."

After emergency crews removed the car from under the tree, Wolff and Donovan was rushed to WakeMed. Donovan suffered cuts and bruises, but should make a full recovery. Officials said Wolff is also stable.

Relatives said Donovan and Green had a child together, a little girl named Heaven, and Donovan is three months pregnant with the couple's second child.

Green's mother, Gloria Green, told Eyewitness News her son's is devastating and she just reunited with him a year ago.

"My son was a good man; he was a good man to his kids and a good man to his significant other," Green said. "I'm trying to be strong; you know what I'm saying for my grandbaby and everybody else you know."

Meanwhile, authorities said the huge tree -several feet in diameter- randomly snapped like a toothpick and plunged on top of the car, crushing it.

Pictures from the air appeared to show that the car was driving down the road when the tree fell over.

There were no reports of any strong weather in the area at the time, so why the tree fell is still under investigation. It appears to have been a freak accident.
