Baby dies after mother killed at bus stop

CHARLOTTE Police said 15-year-old Tiffany Wright was shot and killed while she waited at a school bus stop in north Charlotte before dawn Monday.

Wright was shot in the head, but died later at the hospital. Wright was eight months pregnant. Doctors were able to deliver her child alive, but it died days later.

Late Monday afternoon, Wright's adopted brother, 36-year-old Royce Mitchell, turned himself in on statutory rape charges. Police said he raped Wright back in July and he allegedly fathered her child.

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting. Mitchell is a person of interest in the case.

Wright attended Hawthorne High School, a school with a special program for pregnant teens.
