Light maker Cree bringing 575 jobs

DURHAM The company said Thursday it expects to add 275 jobs this year as it expands production of light-emitting diode chips. The company plans to add another 300 jobs by the end of 2012.

Cree has about 3,500 full-time workers, including 1,500 in Durham.

The company reported in August that it was adding workers as it increased production at plants in Durham and China.

The good news here comes as Dell computer prepares to close down a Forsyth County desktop plant and lay off more than 900 workers. Five years ago, state lawmakers approved more than $250 million in tax breaks to lure Dell to the state.

Gov Bev Perdue says the state plans to get that money back.

"We made it very clear to them and they already understood quite frankly that every red scent of incentive money had to come back to the people of North Carolina," she told reporters at the Cree announcement Thursday.
