Fort Hood suspect tied to Durham

DURHAM First ABC11 learned Major Nadil Hasan, the alleged gunman in the Fort Hood shooting rampage, has relatives living in Durham, and now he was apparently set to work with an Army Reserve unit based out of Durham.

About 24 reservists with the 1493rd Combat Stress Control Detachment team were suppose to be headed overseas with Hasan to provide mental healthcare for soldiers in the War on Terror.

Some of the members are among the wounded in the shooting spree last week.

At least six of the team's members got caught in the crossfire of Hasan's fatal shooting spree. Three remain hospitalized, while the other three have returned to duty.

Though the unit known for providing counseling on the frontline is based in Durham, none of its members are from the Raleigh-Durham area.

ABC11 has been told its unlikely members knew Hasan well enough to predict his violent outburst. He was only recently assigned to deploy with the 1493rd team.

No decision has been made yet about whether to send the unit overseas in light of the shooting.
