Raymond Dunn, a 6-4 sophomore forward for Vance Granville, collapsed on the court near the end of the first half of a game against Guilford Tech, Vance Granville President Randy Parker said.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The results of an autopsy have not been released.
Dunn was named a player of the week in January by the National Junior College Athletic Association after two impressive performances including a career-high 52-point game.
He played high school ball for Norlina Christian School and Parker said Dunn was being recruited by several colleges.
"We're just trying to help faculty, staff and especially the family through the grieving process," Parker said Sunday.
