"I'm trying to get my support and keep them from closing the library," patron Ryan Maddox said.
Commissioners had to get a larger room for their meeting Thursday, because more than 70 people wanted to express their worries about closing Garner's only library.
"That library is a main auxiliary for the southern county," Garner resident Dwight Rogers said.
Residents call it the heart and soul of the community - the only place some can get books and internet access.
"The people in Garner use their library very busy," concerned parent Kelly Maddox said. "I've never gone when there wasn't a lot of people there."
Wake County officials made a countywide request for each department to cut 7 percent from next year's budget.
So far, Garner is the only library threatened. Closing it would recoup $800,000 of an $18 million shortfall, but the idea at this point is only a proposal.
